The AA

Issue

The AA wanted a better understanding of the views of its members on a range of motoring issues in order to inform their contribution to the public policy debate and to help them to speak with authority on behalf of drivers in the media.

"The survey results have been invaluable in helping us to ascertain the views of our members on a range of motoring issues."

Edmund King
AA President

Solution

Populus built an online panel of more than 100,000 AA members which it conducts online surveys among on a monthly basis. Over the past two years the surveys have covered a range of issues including speed limits and the use of speed cameras, fuel prices and duty, the environmental impact of driving, drink and drug driving, the use of mobile phones when driving, congestion charging, road safety, parking charges, the introduction of toll roads and the effectiveness of the Government’s car-scrappage scheme.

Outcome

The research has generated coverage for the AA across a range of national and local print and broadcast media outlets including BBC News Online, The Today Programme, BBC Breakfast, The Financial Times, The Guardian, The Times, The Telegraph, The Independent, The Daily Mail and The Daily Express.

What the client says...

“The AA has been working closely with Populus for two years. In that time we have built up the biggest dedicated motoring panel in Europe which now has more than 100,000 panel members. The survey results have been invaluable in helping us to ascertain the views of our members on a range of motoring issues.

"We have also been able to use the survey results to generate extensive media profile and AA/Populus results have featured in hundreds of interviews from Radio 4’s Today programme to Radio 1’s Newsbeat. The results have also been an invaluable tool in influencing political thinking on key transport issues such as the drink drive limit, speed limits or safety of young drivers. We have always found Populus to be fair, well-balanced, efficient, constructive and fun to work with.”
